March Architecture - Year 5, Project 1
Intersectional Housing Scheme - Moss Side, Manchester

This project sets out to design suburban housing through the lens of an expansive feminist discourse. The area of Manchester selected to pursue this project, is Moss Side as it hosts a diverse population in terms of race, class, gender and more. The variety of requirements that stem from such a mix of residents leads to the ateliers focus on intersectionality - creating a place that is accessible, enjoyable and safe for all regardless of their protected characteristics.

In groups of four, we defined a master-plan for the area based on mapping, following which, we began to focus on individual typologies within this. These should aim to accommodate the range of people expected to live within this suburban area, as well as challenge expectations by bringing in people that may have never considered living here. This exploration begins with the analysis of four prominent figures that have been vocal about the challenges faced by those under-represented in society.
